Admiral Hop pellets are derived from the Admiral hop, a unique and flavourful variety developed in the United Kingdom. Let’s delve into the fascinating history and characteristics of Admiral hops:

  1. Origin and Breeding:

    • The Admiral hop breeding program began in 1984 at Wye College (officially known as The College of St. Gregory and St. Martin at Wye) in Kent, England.
    • Dr. Peter Darby, a prominent British hop researcher, led this successful breeding program.
    • Admiral hops were created by crossing a female plant of the Northdown variety with a male Challenger plant.
    • The goal was to introduce another higher alpha acid variety to the UK hop catalogue and potentially replace the Wye Target variety.
    • After 10 to 12 years of testing, Admiral hops were released for commercial use in 1996.
    • The name “Admiral” is fitting because it is the only “super-alpha” hop developed in the UK, with an alpha-acid content of 13% - 16% or more.
  2. Characteristics:

    • Alpha Acid Content: Admiral hops have an alpha acid range of 13% to 16%.
    • Bitterness: They are assertively bitter, making them suitable for use in pellets and hop extracts.
    • Aroma: While low in aroma, Admiral hops provide a solid background bitterness.
    • Oil Composition:
      • Myrcene Oil: 45% (of total oil content).
      • Humulene Oil: 23% to 26% (of total oil content).
      • Caryophyllene Oil: 6.8% to 7.2% (of total oil content).
      • Francesene Oil: 2% (of total oil content).
    • Usage: Admiral hops are often used in English beers, especially where the focus is on bitterness. Other UK hop varieties, such as Fuggles or North Kent Goldings, complement Admiral hops by adding aroma and flavour details.
  3. Growing Admiral Hops:

    • If you plan to grow hops in your backyard, consider talking to local growers or your local homebrew supply store to choose varieties that thrive in your area.
    • Admiral hops are not patented, and their rhizomes can be purchased for home gardening.

Admiral hops bring robust bitterness to brews, paying homage to their namesake, the famous British Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson. So, whether you’re brewing beer or tending to your garden, Admiral hops add a touch of British excellence
